Pesan : Dear Ladys and Gentlemen of Institut Sejarah Indonesia, in late December/early January (26.12.-7.1.), we will be travelling to Jakarta and Banda Aceh with a small group from the Berlin-based NGO "International Working Group". This NGO mainly organizes trips abroad in the field of political education for young German adults of different political backgrounds, but predominantly from the left-winged spectrum. In the countries we visit we intend to meet NGO-activists, academics, leftists, liberals and the alike to learn about their understanding of the social and political situation in the country and about different ways of political activism. Upon our return to Germany we give lectures and write articles about the experience to share it with others. If we are able to raise funds, we also invite political activists to Germany to enable them to get an idea of the political and social situation here and relate it to the problems in their own country. We do this work voluntarily, because we hope that it will be one of the many small steps that might once lead to a just and enjoyable world for all humans. (You can find our website at http://www.iak-net.de/bahasa-indonesia/. ) The main topic of this year's trip to Indonesia is the role of Islam, Perda Syariat and its impact on women and gender equality in general. Therefore we plan to go to Jakarta and Banda Aceh. In Indonesia we would like to learn from and discuss with people of islamic organizations as well as people of organizations working on human rights, on (post-)colonialism, on poverty, on workers rights, on feminism, on economic development etc., in order to get a broad and controversial idea of what is happening. We would love to meet with the Institut Sejarah Indonesia to learn about the human rights situation in Indonesia, the role of colonialism, the Suharto regime and religion/Islam now and in the past. Our Group will consist of about 7 people, ranging in age between 26 and 42 years. Most of them already graduated and work in different fields from education to academia or film documentary. Some of the participants have been to Indonesia before, others come for the first time. As the International Working Group is a non-profit organization the only reward we can give in return is probably information. Thus if you are interested in any specific aspect of Germany society, just let us know and we will try to present our view on the topic. So, if you would be interested to meet with our group in Jakarta for a few hours, for example on the 29.12., 31.12. or 2.1., and tell us about your work and your perception of the situation in Indonesia, we would be very delighted to hear from you! Thank you so much in advance and all the best for your work, Viola Schlichting from Berlin P.D.: If you would like to talk personally for further information, do not hesitate to contact Mr. Nils Utermöhlen who is mainly organizing our trip and is already in Jakarta: 0857 14312184 nils.utermoehlen@gmail.com
